questions about new tank

I am starting my 10 gallon tank all over again. My old fish got very bad ick, despite all my efforts, I recognized it too late and they all died. I've boiled everything in the tank, and cleaned it super well and I'm ready to start over.

I need a colorful mix of fish for my new 10gallon. I really don't want to over stock. I'm looking at mollies, and catfish. Can anybody suggest a good # mix for a small tank? Or else a good colorful fish mix for a 10G.
Thanks

Re: questions about new tank

you could get a pair of blue ram and 2 or 3 otos/corys

or a pair of dwarf gourami and corys/otos

if i had a 10 gallon id would do either those two

Re: questions about new tank

a few dwarf puffers would be an interesting and fun tank. They'd prefer a diet of live snails.

Unfortunately, you could only get away with 2 DP's in a 10G. They're huuuge polluters and quite territorial. I'd say 1 is better than 2 if you're restricted for space.

Re: questions about new tank

it is....
if you kept 2 d.p.'s.... that's 6"... then you could have a couple corys/otos like they said...
If you kept 3 d.p.'s... (2 females to 1 male) that's 9". Then you could get only 1 or 2 cory/otos.

BUT!! Didn't he say he was looking for colorful mollies??

I have a 10 gallon and this is what I have in my tank...
3 balloon mollies (one black, one white, and one orange...they're beautiful)
1 male gourami (blue and red striped)
3 otos for my algae team
and some guppies!

I'd suggest everything but the guppies... they're breeding and overstocking me! I can't give them away fast enough.
If you did a tank with everything I said but the guppies I think it would be perfect... I filled my tank with red and black gravel and tons of plants! It's really quite colorful like you are looking for!! :-)

Sorry to hear that you are having to start from scratch......What about the new glo-fish, they are brilliant and bright colors and are very hardy since they are hybrids of zebra danios. If you haven't seen them, check out www.glofish.com---they will even give you companies that will mail them to you if you don't have a good LFS.

GOOD LUCK!

It's just my personal opinion, but I would not get 2 Rams for a 10 gallon tank. They need very clean water and a larger tank - I'd say at least 20 - 30 gallons. Sizewise, the same goes for Dwarf Gouramis.

How large do Dwarf Puffers grow? If they're huge polluters, wouldn't a 10 gallon tank be too small?

Are you talking about Ram Cichlids? German Blue Rams get up to 2.5" and Bolivian Rams get up to 3". Or are you talking about Dwarf Puffers? I don't know anything about the Puffers, but someone said they're "huge" waste producers, so this is the reason I am asking if a 10 gallon won't be too small for them.

red wag platys are very colorful, along with sunbursts and would do great in a ten gal tank.

Re: questions about new tank

Great Idea's thanks. I really like the red wag tail platy, but I don't thing my LFS will have anything exotic (wallmart) Although they do have regular platy, gorami, mollies, tetra's, and cory's, barbs etc. I don't like the Oto's....they kind of scare me. What is a sunburst? If it's bright yellow I'll probably love it. I didn't have any luck with the glofish website either....but they do sound cool.

Yea, i meant dwarf puffers.. 3g per puffer is recommended since they produce so much waste.

Re: questions about new tank

that's because the link someone posted was wrong. try http://www.glofish.com/
And you're right, wal-mart probably won't have them.

And Dwarf Puffers ARE huge wasters.. but according to http://www.dwarfpuffers.com/ a 10gallon is fine for them as long as you account for 2-3 gallons per puffer.

Well, I think it's time for YOU to make some decisions! We can't pick your tank for you... we gave some great ideas, now it's your turn!!
Good luck!!

Re: questions about new tank

Just one last note of caution on the dwarf puffers. Apparently, there are two types and one will get to about 1in, while the other gets to about 3in. Make sure you get the 1in ones in that 10G.
