fish choice

I have a 20 gal. long tank with 4 neon tetras and 2 guppies which I have had for about 2 yrs. I have been told about 4 different things by several people so I thought I would ask it here. Can I put a beta in with these fish? One person told me the beta would kill the guppies. Another told me the opposite, and a few told me that they would be fine as long as there is not another male beta. I don't want to get one until I find out more information. Any help would be wonderful.

Re: fish choice

I'm not an expert on bettas (lots of people on here are so I'm sure better help is on its way), but as far as I know the neons will nip the **** out of a betta, at least a male one. A male would probably be aggressive towards the other fish too. A female might work, but they are less attractive and may well be very aggressive too.

Re: fish choice

A Betta wouldn't be a good addition to a tank with Neons or Guppies. The Betta will bite the tails of the other fish and present a nice target to the neons. You'll want 6 neons for a school and at least 3 guppies to keep them happy.

Re: fish choice

I don't know much about Bettas, but in the past I have kept a school of Neons with a pair of Angelfish (Angels have long fins). My Neons NEVER nipped at the fins of my Angels. In my experience, Neon Tetras are ones of the most peaceful freshwater fish I've ever seen.
