Tannins and bog logs!

Hi to all - big thanks to past help, I have a healthy population of barbs thanks to this forum!

I have recently added 2 logs to my tank - boiled them, soaked them for a week, boiled again, added to tanks... 2 weeks in and the tank water has a slight brown tint.
I am sure this is due to tannins still in the logs. The fish actually look happier and levels in the tank - pH, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite are all fine.

My question - do I need to try and keep the tannins to a minimum by water changes until the tank no longer tinits or is a small level of tint nothing to worry about? The tank in question is stocked with only barbs and I plan to re-introduce bristlenose to it.

Thanks again!

Re: Tannins and bog logs!

You can use some activated carbon in your filter to help get rid of the discoloration and any trace minerals that you dont want. Change out the carbon when the color subsides and add more. Knowing where you got the bogwood would tell if there are where any contaminants that would be unhealthy for the fish, such as a nearby factory.. oil on the water etc etc. But as you say you have boiled it good so that should be ok. Tannins by themselves is not unhealthy for the fish. Also remember that the bogwood can lower your PH level so be sure and check that with water testing from time to time.
