do the problems ever stop???

well, i got back today...only been gone a week, and i have brown "stuff" growing all over the glass in my tank i'm gonna head too the lfs tommorrow and get an algae scraper or mag-float...any treatment ideas?

next problem: my 5 gal has been infected with snails
i haven't put any thing from another tank in this tank...i bought the tank used from my lfs, but it had been for sale for at least a week when i bought it...so i don't think they could've survived...i'm stumped...i put some untreated tap water in there, hoping that would take care of them...so i won't add the betta for another week or so

first pic is of the snail...he's that fairly small spot on the ship, to the right of the black filter in the background
second pic is of the brownish red "stuff"

Re: do the problems ever stop???

Cant help you withthe snail issue, as I never had any, but I hear that loaches love to eat them... if you can fit more fish, get a few loaches.
The brown stuff is brown diatoms. Its a form of algea. Looks yuky, but its harmless and will eventually go away on its own, in the meantime Otto cats love the stuff.

Re: do the problems ever stop???

snails can survive a LOT unfortunately and they often laugh at snail-killing liquids or soap even. and that diatoms thing shouldn't be a problem.. you can keep picking snails out and look for any eggs. loaches are the best way to wipe them out, but then you'd need a bigger tank for them.

Re: do the problems ever stop???

you could add to the snail tank some Clown loaches or Goruamis. Another saloution is put a pice of fruit or something in their and then at night come back with a flashlight and take the piece of fruit out and it should be covere with snails. Another solution is pluck them out of a tank anytime you see one. For the brown stuff that is brown algea and take it out of sunlight and scrape of the algae and then reduce the time the light is on the tank because that helps algea grow.

Gouramis won't touch the snails....My snails LAUGH at the gourami...I just vacuum the snails out and dispose of them.

Re: do the problems ever stop???

my lfs just got some pakistanian loaches...anybody know their more common name??
i might get one of those...keep it in my small tank and then put it in the big one once the snails are gone

the diatoms go away on their own? is there any treatment for them...i don't want them there for another day :P

Re: do the problems ever stop???

Pakistani loaches are commonly called yoyos and are too big for that tank. They also need to kept in groups. The tank is much too small for loaches.
http://www.loaches.com/species-index/botia-almorhae .
I suggest you fill it full of bleach water, allow it to set for a couple of days. Empty the tank and rinse, rinse, rinse it very well. add water with dechlor and check for snails. At this point if any survived there will be so few you can pick them out and your tank has received a good disinfection from disease in the process
in the other tank: The diatoms look bad but will go away with a couple of water changes and time. If you don't want to wait you have room for a couple of otos. Otos love diatoms.

Re: do the problems ever stop???

It's a YoYo Loach....http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/p...fm?pCatId=1109 The diatoms will go away in a few days. There's nothing you can do for them without adding unwanted chemicals to your tank....Get a couple of oto cats to eat them...They're small and will help control the algae. 2-3 would be best.

Re: do the problems ever stop???

thats what i thought they were...just didnt read anything...the ones at my lfs are really small, so by the time the snails were gone, they would still be ok in the 5 gal.

i just added 3 corys last wed. and i dont want them to have to contend with other bottom feeders...i was planning on getting 2 panda corys too

if i scraped them off the glass, would that make them spread?

!!! !!!

Re: do the problems ever stop???

Loaches need very clean water, company in groups and plenty of room to move. You really don't have room in the 29G to move a group of three after they are done in the five.
It would be better all around to take care of the problem without involving more fish
