Driftwood

Hey, does anyone know if ocean driftwood is okay to put into a tank? I live by the beach and am looking to put driftwood in my new 15 gal anyway, and thought this may be an inexpensive way to do it. I figure that it's already been in the water so splinters would be long gone (though I'll check anyway), and I would boil it for a long time before putting it in there to get anything out of it.

Any thoughts?

Re: Driftwood

You might want to boil it a couple of times in fresh water to help remove the salt.

and let it soak a week or 2 weighed down in a bowl of treated tap water to get out any tannins it might have.

Re: Driftwood

Thanks everyone for the advice. I went to the beach yesterday and had fun combing the rocks for driftwood, and was able to come up with some interesting pieces. I boiled it for a little while last night, and now it's in a bucket of treated water outside. I'll boil it again before I put it in the tank to make sure I get all the salt and critters out.

Re: Driftwood

I wouldn't. You don't know what has been on it.
