new fish question

Ok, since my ten gallon tank is now sadly unoccupied (Hulk lost his life), it will first of all be easier to move to the new house. Now, second of all, once i get it there, I want to get more fish for it. My question is, what type of fish should/can i get. I really want to get some sort of breeding pair of fish, such as a swordtail pair or ram cichlid pair or something like that. Do I have enough room in a ten gallon for such an undertaking? I plan on removing the bigger formations and adding more plants to the tank, since if i get a breeding pair i would like to have somewhere for the fry to hide and play. any suggestions?

Re: new fish question

Swordtails will be fine in a 10 gal, but I think that a little larger tank would be better being that you want to breed them. You will need to have 2 females for one male. I have 3 sword tails and my male is always trying to mate with the females. In a smaller tank this could very well stress your females out. I have them in a 29 gal, and when I first got swordtails it was only 1 male and 1 female. The constant chasing stressed her out and killed her. I have put 2 since and they are all fine now... Any way good luck!

Re: new fish question

we're sorry to hear that you lost Hulk. i think you'll want a 2nd tank (a grow-out tank) for the babies if you undertake a breeding effort. Livebearers like guppies or platys (or swordtails) are super easy to breed.
