First tank troubles

I am a first time tank owner and wanted/needed to start small. It's rare that I come across a larger sum of money, so I got myself a 10 gallon tank that was on sale for the month at a local pet store. It's decorated with blue gravel, a few fake plants, a tree looking thing, a fake anemone, and some rocks and marbles.

I first started off with one blue gourami, one red glass barb, and one red tailed shark.
Then I bought two more red glass barbs.
Shortly after, I noticed my blue gourami attacking my shark. I tried to separate them but to no avail. The shark died, and I took the gourami back to the pet store.

I now have three red glass barbs and two tiger barbs. Is this a bad idea? The three red barbs are peaceful and friendly, but it's the tigers I'm worried about. So far, everything seems okay. A little chasing from both fish, but that's all. They are still quite small, maybe 3/4ths of an inch long. Will chasing and fin nipping soon become a problem? I hope not...

Re: First tank troubles

Keep an eye on them. Usually you need to keep tigers in groups of 6 or so to keep their nipping under control. I would not add any more fish to your 10 gallon tank, though. You are slightly overstocked as it is with the 5 fish you have, and more will put you way over. The rule of thumb is 1" of fish per gallon, and you go by the fish's adult size...not it's current size. Tigers get up to 3", and the glass barbs up to 2. You are not overstocked enough at this point to panic, but you will need to stay on top of your water quality and water changes.

Re: First tank troubles

That RTS would've gotten too big for the 10g tank. gourami are territorial so that's probably what happened there. the red glass barbs might be dyed fish, i could be wrong, but if they lose color slowly don't get worried. hopefully the tank will stay balanced and i think it has a really good chance of doing well.
