Transfering fish to larger tank?

Is this a god Idea? Anyone had luck with this? Is it difficult?
I was looking around & found a larger tank & we are loving our 20gallon, eventhough we have had some slow going with it.... Maybe I am crazy for wanting a larger tank?? :P

Just wanted to kick the idea around before buying anything.
Any info about this would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Transfering fish to larger tank?

The fish here get moved around often.

They are born in a breeding tank, then after a few weeks transfered to a grwo out tank.
Some of them are later transfered into another larger grow out tank, depending on how many fry I have.

Moving fish into larger tanks, unless there are fish they do not get along with, is almost always a good idea.

Re: Transfering fish to larger tank?

yea, just seed the new tank with good bacteria from the old tank, using the filter sponge and/or substrata from the old tank to help get the new one cycled.. or you can put a filter sponge from a new filter in the old tank for a bit, then transfer it to the new tank.. it depends on if you'll be using both tanks and if you want the new tank cycled before the fish go in, etc.

you're not cray for wanting a larger tank, its normal on this forum, but transferring fish is very easy, just treat it like you've brought home a new fish, acclimating it and everything, and it should be no problem

Re: Transfering fish to larger tank?

Thanks for the info....

I found a 34-40 gallon hexagon tank... just the tank, hood & light ... got the guy to $50.... I just don't have the money for it now...by the time I would buy new stuff for it (like a bigget filter, etc). However, My mom wanted a tank, I told her about it & we are picking it up tonight. At least if she gets tired of it, I will get dibs on it

I wanted to buy the hexagon & sell my mom the 20 gallon with the heater, filter & air pump.. so that's why I would have had to get all that stuff again

The other thing I was thinking of doing... is since I am heading for an overstocked tank is get a small tank for my son's room.... found a complete 10 gallon set up (pump heater, everything.. for $20 or $25... then after it is cycled, move the ADF, one of the neon's & the ghost shrimp... add another neon & ADF, possibly another shrimp, that way the 20 gallon would just barely be overstocked & he could get the other fish he was wanting.. 1 ea.. neon, adf, shrimp.

What do you think... is it was you would you spring for the fully loaded 10 gallon? or wait till you get them all in one tank??

Appreciate you input

maybe you can do the 10g now AND get them all in a big tank later, then use the 10g for other fish?
