final choice slection compatible?

this is what i have decided for my tank:

-5 neon tetras
total:7.5 ''
-5 cardinal tetras (black neons if i continue to not find cardinals in all 3 LFS's)
total:15''
- 2 oto's (would this be fine?)
total:19''

when i bought my 20 gal it seemed like it could hold a few more fish, but i guess the selection i made isnt to bad. Will these fish live happily together? thanks for your help!

Re: final choice slection compatible?

Those should get along just fine together. Remember as you add them to acclimate them slowly...those are not fish to just float for 15 minutes and then put in the tank. Float them first for temperature, then add a cup of water from your tank to their bag every 10 minutes for an hour.

then shake up the bag real good and dump the fish in. jk.. sgould is right on with sound advice. best of luck with your new tank.. the otos are the most sensitive to water conditions so keep an eye on them, but they're fun little fish.

Re: final choice slection compatible?

Do you have a quarentine tank? If not if you can get one but if you aren't able to add the neon's first, they get diseases the easiest and then you can treat them and they won't spread, then the cardinals, then after a few months and your tank is a bit more established the oto's, though you can add 2 more otos. Your fish are minimal waste producers and you will be ok. The oto's tend to die just from stress because of the poor way they are captured, so don't flip if they die and start treating the tank, first test the tank and see what the results are and look for signs of disease.

Re: final choice slection compatible?

i have a 5 gallon mini-bow for a quarentine tank, but is not going too be set up for a while. i was told to add my neon tetras last, after the tank has had fish in it for a month. maybe i should start with some cherry barbs or something hardy? thanks for your help!!

Re: final choice slection compatible?

I would add the otos last...Let some algae form first...They will eat other vegetable based sinking wafers, but prefer algae first.....

Re: final choice slection compatible?

you might want to add it when you get back. i'm not sure, but in the time you're gone with no ammonia source, the tank might go uncycled and it could be safer to wait and get the biospira after you get back.
