Need fish compatability help
Hi everyone! I put 5 orange Mickey Mouse platties In with my 5 tiger barbs and my 5 red bellied tetras. Well, they get picked on so much I have only 2 plattys left. :O( Does anyone know of any orange colored fish I can add to my tank that won't get picked on? I'm looking to add bright, colorful fish that grow to about 2" long, to my lot. I appreciate any suggestions, thanks!!

Thats weird that your platies get picked on. You can try sunrise platies, not quite orange like the mickeys, but they are quite pretty.

Re: Need fish compatability help
I'm not surprised. Tetras and barbs are notorious fin nippers. They stressed out some my guppies to the point where I put them back in the tank they were in...they weren't happy about that. But, they got over it.

Try that compatibility chart.
Interestingly, they do state that you can put platies together with tetras and barbs. Hmm...I haven't found that to be a good combo though. I do know that the more barbs and tetras you have, the less agreesion they will show, since they'll be spreading it acrossed more fish.

Re: Need fish compatability help
All I know is when you have 6 or more tetras/barbs, they rarely show agression to othr fish. Usually platies get along with 99.9% of fish.

Re: Need fish compatability help
a lot of swordtails are orange, and they look really good...but might be a little big
maybe some dwarf gouramis...they aren't all orange, but should do ok
and if you are REALLY desperate, you could get some 12 cent goldfish

Re: Need fish compatability help
As was stated before, tetras and barbs are very nasty fellows. Only keep them with robust, hardy fish that can take a beating.

Sorry to hear you lost your platys. Ive lost platys in my tank as well. It seems they get bullied alot!.. As for a red fish for your tank. I was thinking since you already have tiger barbs, and the red bellied tetras, why not add some serpae tetras? I have them ( 3 of them) in my tank with 4 tiger barbs and with my long fin black skirt tetras (3) and everyone is getting along fine. Serpaes are pretty kewl little guys and active. A school of them, maybe four or five would look really nice. They are not a true red, but more copper/orange. Check them out in the species section... Or you can go with the red skirt tetra??

Re: Need fish compatability help
we're sorry you lost the platys.. they are peaceful fish but barbs tend to be a little more aggressive in a group that size. what size tank to you have? 30g?

Re: Need fish compatability help
I have heard how aggressive the tiger barbs can be, but in my tank, a group of four tiger barbs are fine. They dont bother anyone, just swim around chasing each other without any real aggression. The 3 serpae dont bother the barbs or the 3 long fin tetras either. Im surprised how peaceful that tank is now that the angels are out. And the little otos that I finally went and bought on saturday, (3) are little worker fish and have shown me that they are all that Flbettacouple and others have said they are! They really are neat little guys and i love watching them. I have an oto that is such a tiny thing, and yet he chases the tiger barbs, and not the other way around. Its so funny. And yes.. they sure love the diatoms! I think i need to go and get three more asap!

A word of caution - if your platys got picked on, a gourami will as well...Tetras are fin nippers and Gourami's feeler fins are prime targets.....So if your tetras feel threatened there is a good chance they might pick on the gourami too.

Re: Need fish compatability help
Why don't you try some gold barbs. They are beautiful fish and will not get picked on by your other fish.
