Re: silver dollar from petsmart

It's hard to tell immediately whether a fish has been fin nipped or is actually suffering from rot if you don't know the history of the fish. I would suggest holding off on medicating the fish until you know that there's a real problem -- it may just be that another fish nipped off some of his fins in the pet store, and they will grow back normally. Other fish owners might suggest some antibiotics for a bit to ward off infection if the wounds are open, but I'm kind of a minimalist medicator. I don't use medications unless I know that they are needed. Up to you, I guess.

My advice is to watch for any signs of bacteria or fungus on the fins, and see whether they are growing or shrinking. The fins that are growing back should be a light translucent colour, possibly a little white. Weird looking colours are cause for concern, as are the fins eroding further. You may also choose to add a liquid vitamin like VitaChem to the water, or feed foods with vitamins added to help the fins grow back.

Many fish lose a portion of their fins at some point, and you'd be surprised how quickly those fins can grow back. As long as the fish appears otherwise healthy and the fins are on the mend and not getting worse, I think you'll be just fine.

And yes, I'd definitely say it's a juvenile, though I can't tell you exactly how old it is. Almost all fish sold in pet stores are quite young.

Re: silver dollar from petsmart

i agree with carillon.

what i'd do for that silver dollar is to treat the tank daily with liquid vitamins (like the afore mentioned VitaChem from http://www.drsfostersmith.com/) to encourage fin regrowth and keep the water extra clean. That's worked wonders with our Bettas and in a month totally regrew a female bettas severely damaged anal fin, pectoral fin and scale loss from an apparent attack.

Then if it looked ANY worse, i'd start using the Rid Fungus. I'd also treat the tapwater with NovAqua+ while you're working on getting the fins to regrow (or something like StressCoat).

There's no real need for rid-ich and they have another product called ich-attack that we keep in stock in case of ich outbreaks. like the rid fungus, it's 100% organic and safe for all fish.

Best of luck with your little silver dollar.
