55g almost ready for fish, need your advice

So my 55 is almost through cycling, and Ive almost finished decorating (gets expensive!), so Im starting to look at fish, again.

Ive changed my mind about a thousand times since starting the tank (and before hand actually), but have ultimately decided to go in a more community direction rather than a semi aggresive cichlid, as Id been leaning before.

So heres what Im looking at
Pair Angelfish-6" ea
Severum-8"
Fire Mouth-6"
Small Pleco (maybe bristlenose? suggestions?)-3-6"
Mollies x4 - 3" ea
Blue Guorami - 6"

Total-48"

So heres where I need youre input.

And Im guessing the first veto is gonna be on the severum . Ive heard its doable in this sort of tank, but I dunno. If not him, then maybe suggest a good schooling fish?

Re: 55g almost ready for fish, need your advice

I was thinking of the angelfish. They'd be the ones to watch out for if they buddy up or get into a mating mood.. that will bring out the cichlid aggressiveness. if you're going pleco, a BN or albino BN would work out. The gourami is also a bit aggressive and could have some issues with other fish.

I would be concerned about the severum also. The gourami might also be a problem, though the size of your tank would help a lot with the aggression. Gouramis are beautiful but notorious bullies. I think any gouramis in that tank would be at odds with the angels. I also agree with FLBettaCouple in that the angels would be a problem if they are a mated pair. They will claim half the tank if they are spawning.

Ok, so maybe a single Angel. Or would you still expect problems?

Nix the Severum . Maybe a school of something(maybe danios?) instead, or nothing?

And nix the Gourami or just keep a careful eye on him? If he gets the boot, then what instead?

Bristlenose was pretty much the plan on the pleco

And I dunno if any of you guys have any experience with them, but just the one Firemouth right? Ive read that theyre pretty docile, unless they are spawning, in which case they get very territorial, so I figured just one.

Thanks for the help guys.

When I had my 55gal up, I had 16neons as my schooling fish and they are so cool when they dart across the tank.

Re: 55g almost ready for fish, need your advice

That was probably very colorful. :P

But Im looking for more variety.

Now Im thinking this
1 Angel
5 Zebra Danios
1 Bulldog Pleco (L187)
4 Mollies (2 black and 2 Dalmatian)
1 Krib

But as far as numbers go it seems pretty light. Think I could get more? Any suggestions/changes?

Hey badger, how r u? i have 8 beautiful angels in a 75 gallon with platies. u can keep at least 6 angels in that 55g, they grow up to 6 inches. the rule is 1" of fish per gallon of water. they r a little aggressive during feeding time and they r territorial. u can keep discus, platies, mollies with angels, plecos r not good choice because they sometimes attach themselves with the angels and suck their mucuss..which is stressfull for the angels. danios r good choice

goodluck.

you might up the danios to 6 if you have room, to help curb their nippish tendancies.

Re: 55g almost ready for fish, need your advice

I went down to one angel to avoid accidentally getting a breeding pair that would terrorize everyone else. So I think Ill just stick with the one.

As far as Zebras go I got five yesterday and they seem completely occupied with each other, but heyre the only ones in there for now If you think getting another is a good Idea then I probably will. :P

Unless Im screwin up somewhere, which is possible, Ive got about 39" of fish right now. Should I stay at that or get some more/others. Advice/suggestions?

Again thanks for the help guys

Re: 55g almost ready for fish, need your advice

yea, you could think of him as 'insurance' for the other fish. You could add a few more fish if you had something particular in mind or let the tank be understocked. It would only make for better water conditions and maybe less work for you in keeping the tank clean.

Thanks so much for all your help guys. Im gonna keep the list as is, leaving it understocked. That way if something I really like catches my attention Ill have some room.

if i was u i would stick with the first selection and forget the gorami and the mollies and add some other diffrent ones i have a 70 gallon i'm getting
4 clowns
about half a dozen cory cats
3 firemouths
3 hekeli
3 angles
3 kribs
some congos
2 orange heads

i might have to cut down possible but i think u should stick with the south americas if u dont like some just replace them with silver dollars (in that case no plants) but i think it would look good but ur decision Callum!
