i have a 150 penguin wheel in my 29 gallon tank with a airstone if i take out the airstone and put in powerhead would that be to much for my tank size.
I have a power head in my 29 gallon FW tank for 2 reasons...
1) To disperse my C02 into my tank easily
2) Provide extra mechanical / biological filtration
It is in the same corner as my heater and intake for my Aqua Clear 70 and outputs at a 45 degree angle. The current level is set to medium and it does a great job of moving the water through my plants. The fish seem to have found "new" resting spots since I added it but they also seem very happy about the addition.
It's a "powerhead 201" from back in the day when I had my Oscar and Pleco... I have no idea what it would cross to now a days... The poor thing has been through a turtle for the last 4 or 5 years and is showing battle scars.. But it still works!!
I dont have any powerhead yet for my tank but if i was going to over stock a little would it be a good thing to have and if so what modern day one gargoyle wink wink would i be able to get.
I googled and it crosses to a powerhead 20 made by "Aqua Clear" or "Hagen" depending on who you ask. Should be at just abut every pet supply store on the planet and should also be less than 20 bucks.
No problem... I attached a pic of what mine looks like with the added power head to give a better idea... Still lot of work to do but it keeps getting better so I am loving it!!
Just put my Powerhead in my tank looks great and i can look at my fake plants i have in my tank and can see that they are moving. Just swaying back and forth just a bit. Guess that means i have good water flow through my tank I put in a Maxi-jet 400 by Marineland. 110 GPH so i guess that is ok. I did not install the control tab or tube but i guess i should also get Maxi-Jet sponge prefilter pads 9 that goes on the powerhead to trap more debris. Thanks for everyones help.
In the 55, I have:
Fish:
6 mickey mouse platys (3 gold, 3 blue)
1 red Wagtail platy
3 Dalmation Mollys
1 Silver Molly
4 Oto's
1 Pleco
3 Guppys
Wow, that seems like a lot more on paper than it does in the tank...
The idea behind the CO2 is to help the plants because they're turning a bit brown. I has hoping for CO2 to make them healthier now and then maybe start adding some ferts near their roots next month. (the plants are pretty new)
I would get a 50 or a 70 for a 55 gallon tank... If you get the aqua clear brand there is a flow control on them so you can turn them down if the current is to strong. I have the equivalent of an aqua clear 20 in my 29 gallon tank and it is border line at full power.
I think you would be fine using a 50 if you chose to. You have small fish so don't aim the current at the glass or you may squish one. Aim it at a 45 degree angle to create a nice circular current. If you mount it up high the bottom of the tank will be pretty calm which will give them a place to hide.
Just suggestions and ideas... I am in no way an expert.
I have a powerhead, my fish love playing in it. And I have an 18 in bubble wall for my crawfish...who likes playing in the bubbles. Yeah, I spoil them rotten, but...what are gonna do...they'll annoy each other if they don't have something to play with. :
What is it with bubbles and swords... They almost look sad when I turn it off in the morning.. LOL!!
LOL. I don't turn them off, just down. Honestly, I think I can leave them up...I have 55 gallons to oxygenate...I don't think 1 powerhead and a small bubble wall is gonna kill anything. :

I left mine on but my pH got really high when I had it on heavy for a long time... I think I topped out at 8.0 before I figured out what was happening. Lowered the aeration and my PH followed..
