i have an Rena internal filter about 4 years old. It is much like the Rena internal filter IV but is the older model. It has been out of water for about a year and i am now using it for a tropical tank (in middle of fishless cycle).

The foam filter looks in good condition, do i need to change this and if so why. I know they sell replacement parts but if the foam is in good condition why?

Your advise would be appreciated.

i don't think you need to change the foam if it's in good physical condition. I would recommend rinsing it out though.

Am changing foams about once per 1-2 years. Sometimes they're damaged too much. I noticed that new foams allow a filter to suck more water since they're clean and unused, so that it aerates better as well.

that's what i would say - change it if it's damaged or doesn't work anymore, but other than that, a good rinse/cleaning is sufficient
