Changing a seal on the tank

Does anyone know if it's hard to place a new seal on an aquarium? Only reason I'm asking is that there's one heck of a deal I can get on a 150 gallon tank complete with lights, heater, hood, cannister filter, and the stand. Everything but the water. All the ad said was the tank needs a new seal. All of this for $225 or best offer.

Did anybody ever attempt this before?

Re: Changing a seal on the tank

Hi John. Sorry but I don't know anything about this matter, EXCEPT that you should NEVER fill a tank without the upper trim with water (unless this tank is specifically designed to be without trims - if such tanks exist at all). The trim supports the tank walls that would otherwise crack or even burst under the pressure of water if the tank doesn't have the trims. If you decide to place the trims yourself, make sure that you use the right material that is strong enough to hold all the pressure from the water.

Re: Changing a seal on the tank

I also got a heck of a deal on a 110 gallon with a leak in the seal. Hubby painstakingly removed the silicone from the inside and had to crawl up in it to do this. After the silicone had dried for a few days, we put it out on the front porch filled with water to check for leaks and it seemed okay. We then set it up in the house and added our fish. Everything was fine for about 4 days, and it sprung a leak. Since that time, I bought a 100 gal. tank new that is now their home, and the 110 is still empty. We have since resealed it, but haven't checked it for leaks yet. Resealing a tank is a lot of work and can still leak when you finish doing all that work. You can try, but it's quite a risk, at least in my experience.

Thanks for the info.. I know 1 thing I'd never fit up into a tank, so that leaves that out. Unless I just buy the entire setup and just get a new tank. I know I paid somewhere in the area of $90 just for a hood and light set for a 55 gallon tank at petco or petsmart.

Well it said or best offer also, so maybe I can get it for $100.00, or I'll just keep looking around.

Thanks Gals

Re: Changing a seal on the tank

my experience with trying to reseal a used 90g was a disaster - just like Gunnie, it was fine for about a week and one morning it poured out all over the livingroom...it is still empty. am not ever going to buy used again. I may turn the empty into a terrarium with lizards or turtles.. or a giant home for our fat hamster, Henry...haven't decided yet! lol
