Filters

Hi,

I have a rather dumb question..

So I know all about the nitrogen cycle and have I have gotten 3 Zebras live very nicely in my tank. I was just wondering, the instructions for my filter system said to replace the filter cartridge monthly, but won't this re-start my nitrogen cycle because the bacteria are in the filter??

Thanks guys

Re: Filters

Bacteria also grows in places besides the filter, so you could have a mini-cycle but nothing major in an established tank. There is no need to change the cartridge until it is so dirty is is slowing the flow of water. If it is starting to get clogged, you can swish it in used tank water--the stuff you remove in water changes is fine. Don't change it until you have to, and if possible only change half of it at a time, but no huge deal if you can't.

Re: Filters

Like Omorrokh said, don't change the media until you have to. That's where a good majority of your bacteria is. I've had my media rinsed and put back in the filter for 6 months! That's how they make their money after the sale. It's not necessary, and can cause a mini cycle everytime you do it and stressing the fish.

Good way to make money! Rinse it in a bucket of water drawn from your tank when you do a water change.
