I know that you should have 10x your tank size for gph but why is that. PLease respond soon because a guy needs to konw WHY it's that way.

So you can filter the water effectively. More GPH means it filters more.

I guess it's just a general rule to make sure your water gets filtered enough...like, who knows WHY one inch per gallon/12 square inches of surface area per inch works, people just accept it as a tried and true method.

But it depends on your actual filter, for example my Internal Eheim turns over my water 9-10 times an hour while my External on my larger tank only turns over the water 5 times an hour, but my External cleans my water much faster than the internal in the small tank. Probably due to the amount of filter media in it compared to the internal. Probably for the HOB filters/internal you need the extra turnover because they dont do as good a job as they dont have much filter media
