oh... urgh... I had a whisper 60 too, and by no means does it live up to its name... mine was so loud I heard it even from the other room. I changed filters because I couldnt stand the noise. I replaced it with a marineland penguin 350, much more quiet, better filter.

I have a whisper 20 and a whisper 60, both of which are very quiet other than the occasional water splashing if the level in the tank drops too much. Same question as Dino...is it new?

If you haven't already, pull the intake tube completely off and re-seat it to be sure it is snugly in place. If that doesn't work...shoot it I guess. I've not experienced this with mine.

Might be a defective unit - ours is quiet.

We get so used to the sounds of filters and air pumps in the fishhouse that I don't even notice them anymore, but if you can't fiddle with it to get it to be quieter and prefer quietness it wouldn't be hard to replace it, or contact the company for ideas about why it may not be quiet.

if anyone is still reading this thread...
i just got my hands on a whisper 20, I think it is the noisiest thing in the house... WAY louder than even my dishwasher or the tooodler running around playing. Hubby and I took it apart wondering if there wasn't something wrong... nothing wrong.. just loud. I'll be replacing mine.

i suggest going with a marineland product bio wheel its kinda noisey but one of the best fitler you can buy most of the noise is from the bio wheels being sprayed by water.

If you get the Penguin version of the bio wheel (vs the Emperor), the wheels arent sprayed, they are just fed by the filter output, and are less noisy.

And even the Emperors aren't loud -- I have two 280s on my 56g, and you can barely hear them even when the room is otherwise completely quiet.
