one Aquaclear 70 or 2 30 for a 40gallon long? and some other advice needed

My mom and youngest brother bought a 40 gallon long tank today. They got a nice deal on it, $62.99+tax new. We are going to build the stand for it this weekend.

They are thinking of either getting one 70 gallon, and put it right in the center of the tank or two 30,one at each end. Which would be a better setup?

Also what wattage should they get with a vesi-therm heater. 150W or 200W?

thanks

You guys here rock!

Either way would be fine. Having two would give you a bit more control over the filter medium, and would evenly distribute the water flow. But one 70 would filter the tank just fine, too.

The 150w is good to 45g, but I'd get the 200w just to have some extra heating power. The larger heater won't work as hard to keep the temp stable.

I'd go with the aqua clear 70, you can adjust the flow strength...I once ran an aqua clear 70 on a 29 gallon on lowest power. Worked great!

I'd get 2 filters, each with at least 200gph (400gph each if you don't have any fish planned for it that can't handle the current) and put them about 1/3rd of the way from each end so you get 3 equal spaces.
