Filter Question

My filter is taking in water just fine, but it seems to be taking in to much. I have a power filter and the entry bay is leaking back into the tank along with the media bay. Is this bad?

Thanks.

Make sure the intake tube is firmly seated -- it sounds like it's not, and water is backing up out of the impeller housing.

Joe,

That fixed the filter pretty much. It does look like it is backing up a bit but not much. It is a little leak instead of a constant flow as it used to be. Thanks and if that is still bad let me know.

In theory there shouldn't be any leaks on the intake, but it's not bad, really -- after all, it's not like it's introducing anything that isn't already in the tank. At worst it's reducing the flow through the filter material.

What brand filter? It may be worth taking it out of the tank and giving it a good cleaning (keep the bio material, whatever it is, wet while you do so) -- something may have gotten stuck in the intake housing, or the impeller may need cleaning.

The filter is a top fin. It came with my tank start up kit. It is only 10 gal.

The filter is brand new and I have not fish and have not put anything in the tank that would clog it. Anyway I think it just might be kind cheap that is why but I could be wrong.

Again it is a very little drip and your right nothing is going in the tank that is not already in it.

Let me know what you think.

i'd go ahead and return it if you can. It's a little thing, but a new filter shouldn't be doing that, who knows how bad it would be a few months from now.

Sounds like you got the same starter kit I did. I eventually ended up ditching the top fin and replacing it with a small Penguin filter, and my tank is much happier and cleaner now. So do like Dave said and return it for a new one, or use it as is and plan to upgrade it in the future to a Penguin or AquaClear.
