New filter?

I've now re-housed my two goldfish from my 5.5 gallon tank, and I'm getting ready to do the changeover from a UGF to HOB filter. Already got myself a HOB filter... brought it home.. and gah. Realised that my tank is one of those.. beginner kits. With a hood and a light and everything. So i can't actually put a HOB filter on it without taking the whole hood off and forgoing it completely. Is there an alternative to the HOB that would work well for a betta?

do you have apicture of your 5.5 gallon? you could always cut a hole in the hood. Ive done that on numerous occasions.
