changing filters

I decided to get an aquaclear 50/200 for my 20gal to replace the undersized and loud wisper filter it came with (i got the whole thing second hand).
right now i'm letting both filters run. how long do you guys think it will take for bacteria to colonize the new filter media? When should i take away the old filter and let the new one take over?

If you can take the sponge out of the whisper and put it in the media chamber of the aquaclear you could stop the whisper right now. After about a week you could then remove the whisper sponge from the aquaclear, as by then the media in the new filter should be seeded.

okay, so i attempted to put the old filter media in with the new media and it won't fit do you think a week is enough to seed the new media? and maybe add some prime just incase?

All you should need to move over is the black sponge...not the white pouch with the carbon in it. The sponge should be compressible enough to fit into the other filter if you take it out of its frame.
