Filter recommendations

I'm concerned about the aeration in my 20 gallon tank. I have a hang on back AquaOne filter (Australian brand so you probably wouldn't have heard of it) but the water surface on the opposite side of the tank is pretty much constantly still - doesn't seem to be much circulation there at all.

I also have a problem with the tank re-cycling everytime I clean the floss / carbon cartridge in tank water because the biomedia cartridge is this weird spikey plastic thing which doesn't seem to colonise bacteria very well (therefore most of the bacteria is on the floss part which you are meant to clean and replace).

I really want to get a new filter but I'm not sure if I should ditch the hang on back style all together or get a higher quality one with more gallons (litres) per hour filtration, which would probably increase circulation / aeration.

So what gallons or litres per hour would you recommend? My current one filters my entire tank volume 3x in an hour, but I have heard anywhere from 6-10 is better. My tank is probably half stocked and all the fish waste seems to sink to the bottom so my gravel is always filthy and requiring vacuuming all the time. The filter doesn't seem to intake much of the waste at all.

Re: Filter recommendations

If there is very little water movement in the tank, that could be contributing to the rapid waste accumulation in your gravel...keeping in mind that some accumulation is unavoidable. That said, better water movement would keep more of the stuff stirred up in the water collumn where it can eventually be sucked into the filter. For a 20 gallon tank, a hang on filter should be sufficient, but you are right in suspecting that 3x tank volume per hour is not sufficient. 10x is a pretty common recommendation, though you could get away with a bit less than that, particularly if your tank is not fully stocked. There are a couple of things you can do overall to improve the filtration and water movement in your tank. One I would strongly recommend would be to get a bigger filter, perhaps one with a sponge for bio-filtration if you are having trouble with your current style. After that, to improve water movement in parts of the tank that are too far from the circulation created by the filter, try either putting in an air stone or a power head. On both my 20 gallon tank and my 55, I put an air disc (something like this: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Produc...&N=2004+113405) on the opposite end of the tank from the filter to help create some additional circulation. The movement that creates will be pretty gentle. If you want something stronger, look into the power head option.

Hope that helps!

Re: Filter recommendations

That's exactly the info I was after. Thanks so much
I'm still leaning towards the HOB filters because I'm familiar with them. I am hoping to find this one locally http://www.theaquariumshop.com.au/sh...rium+Filter+35 . Every site that sells it online is sold out atm.. I hope that's a good sign haha.

That one will filter my tank water a bit over 8x an hour which I think will be better. That one has a sponge as the biomedia part, and I think you put 3 in there so if they fall apart and you do need to replace them you can do a 3rd at a time.

I'm definitely going to get an airstone / bubble wall too.
