How do I know if my biological filter is working?

I bought this guy: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Produc...&N=2004+113424, but as I've stated a few times I am still very new at this so I can't tell if it's working.

I plugged the air line tubing into the receiving end, and now bubbles are constantly running up from it. The item description says these bubbles should be "minute" the ones I'm seeing clearly are not minute. I have no idea how to tell if it's doing what it's supposed to be doing. PS - The "instructions" that came with it were minimal at best.

I'll post an image later.

Re: How do I know if my biological filter is working?

It is probably working if it is bubbling and the airtube is in the right (and only) hole for it. Dunno why it says minute and isn't, other than perhaps the air pump is more than what they would prescribe for that size, but no worries. The more bubbles you have the more aggrivated the surface will be, which is a good thing usually. (in moderation of course .)

The ones we have in the fishhouse are by no means minute amounts of bubbles.

Wait a day or two of it running, take it out and squeeze it into a bucket of fishwater, if a bunch of poo and other biological waste comes out you know it was working.
