sponge filters

would just a sponge filter be any good in a breeding tank? stupid question hey! but i'm just unsure of the whole filtration thing as they only run of the airpump and basically there is nothing in the centre except for a hollow tube.I realise they are good so fry dont get sucked up but just not sure if I should be running some other form of filtration.
any thoughts??

Re: sponge filters

I only use sponge filters in my fry tanks. The water is pulled through the sponge so it needs to be rinsed in used tank water occasionally. Good stuff grows on the sponge filter for your fry to feed on also.
On another note my fry tanks are usually bare bottom so they can be cleaned easier.

Re: sponge filters

how big is your tank? how often will you be changing the water? how many fry?

another way to keep fry out of the filter, but use a larger filter, is to just put a sponge over the intake of your filter. that would likely get you more filtration, but keep the filter fry safe.

Tank is 150litre,will be doing daily water changes as 2 discus are going to be added to tank for breeding purposes,so I have decided on the sponge over filter intake for now.thanks for your replies.

Re: sponge filters

I'll let you know if it's stupid or not. LOL Seriously, I built a DIY one for my 10 gallon breeder tank. I'll let you know if it works. Only thing I know now, it wasn't hard to build and was a lot of fun.

No worries,be interested to how it works out. I was just a bit stumped on wether or not just this kind of filtration would be okay for the adult pair,so i am running other filtration for know but will definately be useing the sponge setup for the fry when they are separated from parents.cheers.
