| Logging On Hi all! im wondering if any of you that are able to log on now, are using vista as an operating system?
The reason im asking is we have some members/mods who still arent able to log on and the common demoniator seems to be vista is their OS ....thanks a bunch! lets hope everyone can get back soon!! |

| Well Nate, you blew my theory out the window! lol
I thought for sure it was something to do with Vista.
My daughter can log in fine on her desktop running xp.
I still can't log on with my laptop running vista.
Ted was kind enough to try and help. He says I probably have to wait it out.
Makes me wonder how many existing/new members think the forum is still gone. |

| For those of you who have Vista issues or are communicating with someone who has Vista issues, do you get a reply if you ping the site by IP address?
1. Hold down the windows key on the keyboard and press R to bring up the Run box
2. Type cmd and press enter
3. Type ping 174.123.200.146 and press enter
You should hopefully see four lines that look similar to Reply from 174.123.200.146: bytes=32 time=24ms TTL=51 If so, then it would appear at first glance to be a DNS issue (meaning your ISP likely doesn't yet know that "www.fishlore.com" is supposed to direct you to 174.123.200.146). You can either wait for your ISP to update (which usually only takes 48-72 hours), or you could try switching DNS servers to something like OpenDNS. I've used OpenDNS for years, and I can attest that they are resolving the new server address correctly. https://www.opendns.com/start/ https://www.opendns.com/start/device/windows-vista |

| Thank Mathas.
I haven't tried your suggestion yet, but my daughter can bring up the forum. We're on the same wireless network, same ISP.
She's running xp on a desk top, I'm running vista on a laptop.
Wouldn't that mean our ISP does indeed know it's supposed to direct me here? |

Have you tried flushing your local DNS cache? If not:
1. Hold down the windows key on the keyboard and press R to bring up the Run box
2. Type cmd and press enter
3. Type ipconfig /flushdns and press enter
Does that do any good for getting you logged in? Last edited by mathas; August 27th, 2009 at 10:26 AM.

| I sent you a pm about the instructions you gave me and the reply I received.
I tried the flush thing last night (Ted gave instructions for that)
It said it was successful, but didn't help with the log in. |

| It's been a while since I've used Vista, and forgot to ask a key question... do you know if your user account has administrative privileges? |

The screen should look somewhat similar to this, though I blurred my DNS server name since I'm at work and using their servers with proprietary server/domain names. Last edited by mathas; August 27th, 2009 at 06:39 PM.
Reason: the list probably shouldn't have two steps numbered 4 |

| Sorry I've come in so late on this one. I might appear as though I'm logged into FL, but I was actually asleep in front of the telly! I will be absolutely no help and also say that I have Vista, and was able to get onto FL when I arrived home from work yesterday.
This morning, I was able to get onto FL from my office PC, and that has Window 2000? I think! I didn't have to go through any process from either location. |

| It says:
Default server: Unknown
Address:
Server Unknown
Address:
***Unknown can't find www.fishlore.com: Server failed
I left out the IP address. I don't think it's mine and It's not FL's
If it's important, I'll pm it to you. |

1. Hold down the windows key on the keyboard and press R to bring up the Run box
2. Type cmd and press enter
3. Type ipconfig /all and press enter
Take note of the values by 'DNS Servers'. Can you either follow the same steps on your daughter's computer or ask her to? I'd be curious to know if you're both using the same DNS servers... I can't see why you wouldn't be, but stranger things have happened. |

| Ummmm....ok
Something to note on the differences between to the computers:
Mine has built in wireless. Her's I had to hook up an adapter to pick up the wireless.
Any way
My DNS server is the address I left out in my previous post.
Hers is different and doesn't look like an IP address with all the numbers. Just single numbers separated by a . (dot) |

Hers is different and doesn't look like an IP address with all the numbers. Just single numbers separated by a . (dot) | That's likely to be the difference as to why she can log in and you can't. The DNS servers she's pointing to have picked up the new address, the ones you're pointing to have not.
Would I be right if I guessed she was pointing to 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2?
You could try changing your network adapter to point to different DNS servers, either the ones your daughter uses or to OpenDNS. If you do choose to try changing your DNS servers, regardless of what you try changing it to, OpenDNS has great instructions for doing so: https://www.opendns.com/start/device/windows-vista |

| No, hers is 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.3
Instead of making those changes on my computer, is it possible waiting it out will work? |

| I don't know if this will be any help, but on Tuesday morning before work I tried the site and was finally able to get on. Then when I got to work I went to the address bar's down arrow and chose Fishlore.com off of the "remembered" list. It came up as page not found. I thought "that's odd" so I googled fishlore.com and clicked the link google provided. I got right in. I then closed IE relaunced and choose fishlore.com from the address bar list and got right in. I don't know if it was a coincidence or not, but it's worked fine since. |

As I mentioned earlier, most DNS servers update their cache every 48-72 hours from what I understand... so if the domain name move was completed on August 25th, I would expect it to start working sometime today or tomorrow.
If it's not working by Saturday, it might time to start looking at other options. |

| Hi John, good to see you back
My browser doesn't remember anything. I'm nuts that way. lol
Thanks mathas, I really appreciate all your help.
I'll wait. If it doesn't help, I'll start messing with the DNS thing.
Makes me nervous since I don't understand any of it. Last edited by Lucy; August 27th, 2009 at 11:10 AM.

| Mike told me that there may just be some time needed for the internet to disseminate the new server information to all of the different ISPs. He said the process can be from a couple of seconds to a few days.
For the record, I am using a laptop running Vista and a wireless connection. |

I haven't seen Ken yet, guess he's still having problems.
We were wondering if it's because of our rural locations that it's taking longer. I can't get any of the more popular big name internet providers.

Just to let you know. I did the nslookup thing that mathas to try it out (I was curious LOL) and I got something similar to Lucy's one. But at the end it's different.

But I have no trouble logging in to Fishlore... Weird and complicated stuff here. haha
Hope you get everything resolved soon, Lucy! We would miss you if you couldn't log in. But glad you still can log in through your daughter's desktop. |

The worst part was not knowing what was going on with the site. But I did find a couple of members who went to "Yahoo answers" (or something) and were asking what happened to the site, so I knew it wasn't just me who couldn't access the site. |

IE and FF are both finding FL for me again. I'm so excited. No more proxy!
Thanks for everyone's help!
Especially Mathas and Ted for giving things for me to try even though all I really needed was patience! |
