What's wrong with the forum

I was thinking Mike would just fix it in due time but it's been going on since last night when it's really slow.* Now sometimes I can't see pictures even if I'm logged in, sometimes I can't reply to posts, and sometimes after I post it won't take me back to the forum page and I have to click on home but it still posts

Is there something wrong with the server again Mike, I'm not mad, just wondering?

thanks

Austin

edit: have I been locked or something, I can't replay to anything

Re: What's wrong with the forum

I feels like it's been much slower for me too in the past couple of days. Could it be too many users logged on at the same time? In my case, actually, would be doubtful as there's the time difference.

Re: What's wrong with the forum

I don't know, I can't reply to a lot of topics, it's really strange. I don't know why I can all of a sudden reply to this topic but the button is just gone when I view topics. I think it might be something with the server, don't know. Hopefully it will get fixed soon though.

Re: What's wrong with the forum

I would imagine there is some kind of bandwidth issue with the hosting server, which would cause images to time out before loading, etc. I couldn't get the site to load at all last night, and it is very slow today. Hopefully it is resolved soon, I gotta get my fix!

LOL I do too, the slow part isn't too bad, it's the not being able to post someplaces.

Re: What's wrong with the forum

I have run into servers that have this problem from time to time.. Basically they oversell their space so on busy weekends or times of high traffic the server cannot keep up and runs very slow.

In a nutshell it is not the site's fault or Mike's but the hosting provider.

That's what I was thinking and didn't make a post about it, but do you know why my ability to post randomly doesn't work?

Re: What's wrong with the forum

Probably because the CPU load on the server gets so great that it starts to cancel processes which would cause your ability to post to not work at random times. If you try to post and it does not take you could try to do it again and see what happens.

Basically a server is a lot like your home PC. If you over load it the first thing it is going to do is start dropping processes so it can keep up. With a server that means that is will drop queries and requests in order to keep itself running the best it can.

The sad part is that most hosts know they are overloading the server or pushing it to it's limit and continue to add more clients to it when it is already overstocked so to speak. If you are on a dial-up connection the effect on your posting ability would be amplified because of the additional lag time involved in propagating your posts.

Re: What's wrong with the forum

Yes, I've noticed the slowness too since last night. I contacted our host and they looked into it and think the problem is on AT&T's end. My internet connection is DSL thru ATT. I've done a trace route to fishlore.com and it does seem like the connections are lagging once they hit the ATT servers. That was last night and I was hoping it would have cleared up by this morning but it looks like it has not.

I've also tested using http://www.websitepulse.com/help/tools.php which shows you how long pages take to load. Using this tool, which presumably uses a different route to hit the server that hosts fishlore, page load times are around .5 to 1 second to load, which is fairly fast. I did transfer the site to the "high speed" server a few weeks back and hoped these slow page load problems where a thing of the past.

So, it may be your internet provider's network that is slow. However, I'd be interested in hearing back from anyone if they are seeing the slow load times too and if they have a different internet provider than ATT (SBC Yahoo). If the forum is slow for you and you have a different provider, please post back with your internet provider. If it's a mixed bag, I'll let our host know and see what else we can do to fix this. If thats the case, there must be something else wrong.

Please lemme know,
Mike

Re: What's wrong with the forum

Ok, makes a bit of sense. I use DSL and my dad works for AT&T. If it's a large problem he may know about it but he doesn't work on weekends so he wouldn't hear about it until Monday. When he comes home on Monday and if it still persits I'll ask him.

Our provider is AT&T (DSL) in Dallas/Ft. Worth area, TX here... Load times are still slow for me, but not timing out anymore. Thanks!
