| Do we have the capability now of having a chat room I know that Mike has been swamped and is probably still trying to get settled in with the new server so this is just a question for future reference. I don't even know if this is possible. I know that some of us have a tendency to get a bit off topic at times just talking to each other so I thought maybe....just maybe. maybe I just need more or less coffee or something because for some reason my brain is in overdrive. |

| This suggestion has been brought up a few times before and has been turned down for valid reasons: members chat room |

| It got shot down before, because someone would have to be constantly moderating it to keep it appropriate. |

| As Lucy and Amanda said, it's been discussed (to death, actually). Mike has said "No" unequivocally every single time it's come up, and his reasons for saying so are very compelling. Aside from keeping things appropriate, there are issues of keeping kids safe, keeping the spammers out, and the like.
There's also the fact that advice given in chat would potentially be isolated. One of the great things about a forum setup is that advice offered can be checked by others, both so others can learn from it and so others can agree or disagree with it. If someone got bad advice on a Sunday morning (we tend to be dead then), nobody else may notice it, and they may not realize that the advice was bad until their fish died. |

| I agree because this is a family friendly website and chat rooms can get a little harsh..... |

| Yeah, even though we have more resources now it is still a "no go" for all of the great reasons mentioned above. |

| There's plenty of other chat things: facebook, gmail chat, msn, etc etc...
Feel free to join the Facebook Fishlore group and friend request the members on there, and chat there! Then it's out of Fishlore 'jurisdiction' and so they're not responsible for what's said lol. |

It's not just that we're washing our hands of what happens outside of Fishlore (though we are, because we have to), it's also that we want parents to feel comfortable giving their children access to Fishlore. That way, if they don't want their children in unmonitored, unrestricted chat, Fishlore can still be on the list of safe sites. |

I pride fishlore in the way that I would trust my sons to get on here and be able to talk safely. I have one boy just big enough to get online and it scares me to death the thought of some of the websites out there that prey on kids.
Facebook is awesome people!!
Fishlore rules! |

| I've been watching this thread closely.
Thank you Mike! As a mother, it's important to me that my daughter can access this site for her fish questions and I don't have to be concerned
All of you take such good care of her! Thank you! |

| I understand the reasoning, but why not put in word filters? Or save the chat logs so mods could scan over them the next day or something? I wish this would somehow be possible, would be great to chat real time. Still enjoy the site. |

| Hi Matt
The problem with scanning over the logs the following day is if something were to happen or be said, the damage may have already been done.
Word filters such as we have on the forum would filter out prohibited words but again, it would be impossible to protect the our underage members as well as know what advice was being given out in the name of Fish Lore. |

Was just thinking out loud as i have seen them on many other sites with these features. |

| Thank you Fish Lore... for NOT making this eplace like all the others. I too have seen chat features on other forums. They can be rude, obnoxious and down right filthy. Most of them either have nothing to do with the forum topic, or they are continued posts that turn nasty. Since our wonderful moderators are volunteer, I would suspect there "real lives" may suffer a bit if we were to add additional pressures of monitoring these types of rooms. As said above, there are more places to chat than ever before....just need to pick one. |

| I personally think that Fish Lore is better off without a chatroom. I believe the moderators already have a big enough burden of monitering the Fish Lore forums. Let alone a live chatroom were anything can be said or done. Fish Lore has many helpful members that would be glad to answer your questions. When you post a thread you will usually find an answer in a matter of minutes. The moderators can privately talk through PM's anyway. I don't really see the need for a chatroom. | Nobody hurt my feelings I promise. I was just trying to make a little joke to let everybody know that. Sometimes people don't take my jokes the way that I plan for them to. And hey I like to be part of that opinonated group. You will have to ban me to get rid of me. NO OFFENSE TAKEN BY ANY MEANS!!! LOL |
