Fish Photo Contests Suggestion

Hey all,

I was wondering if you guys also felt that we should have split aquarium contest sections e.g. Saltwater aquarium photo contest and Freshwater aqaurium photo contest.

I think this would make it more fair because lets face it, Its alot easier to make a FW tank look awesome then it is to make a SW tank look awesome for the simple reasons of time, money, maintenance etc.

Please vote above "Yes" in favour of these new sections and "No" if you are against the idea.

Thanks,

Matt

Happy Fishkeeping!

Regarding cost, I would disagree a little. A high tech planted tank with Co2, ADA aquasoil, all the drop checkers, bubblecounters, reactors, etc. You will have quite a bit of money invested. In terms of maintenance a "high tech" planted tank is also at the top of the heap.
Having said that it would be nice for the Salty folks to have their own contest. There are alot more of us FW people here and there would tend to be a bias IME.

Wow, looks like we've lost all the replies on this thread from yesterday.
Last I had looked, before the forum shut down was:
2 for yes
9 for no.

I don't think its a good idea. First of all, it would involve an added cost because Mike would have to supply another gift card to the winner.

Also, I agree with Nick's statement about planted tanks. They can be just as challanging and time consuming as saltwater, and its not easy to make them look good. aquascaping is challanging and so is getting your plants to grow with the right combination of lighting, ferts, and CO2. Trimming and maininance is another thing that takes a lot of work.

While both can be quite costly, I do think that we should split the two, just because the ideas of what looks good are so different. You can't just a tank full of corals and live rock against a tank of plants, they just have different standards of what looks good. For the SW it may have many different colors, shapes, and textures that FW could be lacking, and FW could have a lot better aquascaping, harmony, etc. (since I'd imagine that it's very hard to aquascape with living, moving corals, anenomes, etc.)

Look at these two links. The first one, a tank by Takashi Amano, has great aquascaping and a sense of balance that no SW tank can have, yet the colors don't compare at all to the tank in the second picture.

That is why we need both.

This is a debate that could have many sides.....shall we also seperate those with point and shoot cameras and LSR cameras?
Surely, it's easier to get an awesome pic from a more expensive camera.
Planted from non planted tanks? You get the idea.
Where do you draw the line?

My post was lost (as were many others) about this.
There's also our generous sponsers of these contests who donate the gift certificates, the forum would have to find additional merchants willing to donate.
In the end, this is just for fun and Mike has the final word on how the contest is run.

I think the contest is fine as it is.

I try to go and look at all the fish and aquarium pics each month and love it but if I had to go to two or three places every time I wanted to catch up with what had been added I probably wouldn't. Just my thoughts.
