Goldfish Profile Question

It has always been my understanding that most would recommend a 20 gallon tank for the first goldfish, and 10 for each additional goldfish. Yet the goldfish profile on FishLore states a 10 for the first goldfish, and then another 10 for each additional. Also, perhaps this is just a personal preference but shouldn't the profile state somewhere that, although goldfish can adapt to a wide array of temperatures, they really thrive from about 64-72F? I know that most of us generally advise NOT to keep goldfish with other tropical fish, but IMO the profile suggests that this is actually advisable (suggests platies and possibly guppies as tankmates). Perhaps along with the info that goldfish can live in a wide array of temperatures, there can be some stipulation that they are most suited to the 64-72F range?

I realize that we probably are not allowed to edit the article. I would absolutely be willing to write another one aside from the fact that I've never kept goldfish and don't feel very qualified to write about them. But perhaps another member would like to volunteer to write it?

Thanks

That would be great!!As I was a bit confused by the one you describe,I do believe nevelle added an excellent care sheet in the goldfish section which I have been using as a reference since I am very new to this type of fish

I had noticed that too, I see it's been fixed now Looking over the article now, though, I see that it says:

'You can also make life much better for your fish by getting some form of filtration, such as a box or corner filter with a small air pump. These small filters are fairly inexpensive and the filter media can be changed out easily when you do a water change.'

Isn't it bad to change out the filter media each water change?

That was referring to keeping the goldfish in a bowl or tiny tank. In that kind of thing, the filter probably would get gunked up on a weekly basis.
If you read on, it says "or, if you want to give your goldfish a chance, try not keeping it in a bowl, but in a 20g tank..." or something like that. It may be a bit awkwardly worded, but it does suggest keeping a well-filtered tank.

Good points - I just took out that paragraph since the one below it talks about getting a better filter for a goldfish.

Thanks,
Mike
