I will say this much, don't feel bad about what you were doing with your fish. Everyone learns and expands in this hobby, I am learning stuff everyday.
Something interesting I found was a "Innes"
fish book from 1966 that was my husbands grandmothers. WOW the stuff they did then versus now fishkeeping has come a long way. No mention of a nitrogen cycle in that book, nor could my mother or grandmother remembering "cycling" their tanks in the 60's-80's.
This is a wonderful hobby to enjoy and learn from. Plus if you have children its a plus. My 2 boys have learned so much about the fish, habitats, etc and really enjoy helping me w/ them. My 6 year old can tell me when I have a momma cichild holding babies. My 3 year old just loves them, and respects the tanks enough not to mess with them and he hasn't for over 2 years now. He was the one who got me into fish, and I had a lot to learn myself!
