| A Reminder for all of us I've noticed a lot of people slinging some words that probably should not be used around here.
No, I'm not talking about swears (though they should, of course, be avoided.)
I'm talking about words like "expert," "guarantee," "always right," and "knows everything."
The good news is that these words are usually used in regards to a person other than the poster, which means that we've got a healthy level of respect flowing around the forum. This is awesome.
However, one of the basic precepts behind Mike's creation of Fishlore was that nobody can be an expert in this hobby. Even with regards to a single, small aspect of the hobby, like a single species or the concepts of filtration, there's so much information that is still debated, that nobody can be infallible.
Further, focusing on one person as "knowing everything" can limit other members' ability to acquire information from other sources.
Many of these accolades have been directed at mods. While Mike does choose mods based on a certain ability to dispense help, we are far from infallible. There are even points where we disagree with each other on certain points of aquarium care (which means at least one of us has to be wrong, or at least less right.)
I'm not saying that you shouldn't back up someone who knows a lot. That's helpful. I just want to remind folks that the thing that makes us different from most of the other aquarium forums out there is that we don't have any singular experts: We have a community knowledge that is far greater than any amount of information that a single person can possess. |
