Question: Chatroom?

This has cropped up several times in the past.... Sorry for the delay in responding but I don't want to have chat software on the website. They are too easily misused, abused and are a haven for predators. I'm sure the majority of us would use it appropriately, but there is always that small percent that would ruin it for everybody.

And fishlore is blocked in school computers.

My husband would LOVE to block fishlore, but he is even more computer illiterate than I am, has NEVER even turned one on OR off, so his only solution is to bash it in with a baseball bat, or let me play! Some times he even asks me to google something for him, so......for now I'm safe!

I agree it would be too hard to monitor, and as it is when a problem creeps in, it is hard to catch it in time for feelings not to be hurt. I think the mods do a great job of making fishlore a friendly safe place for all of us!

And one thing I love about fishlore, even if there is no chat room, everyone gets an answer, in a short amount of time. every time I log on there are new threads for me to talk on, and new questions to answer, and new friends to be made

I don't think this is a good idea. There are other chat programs that can serve the same purpose. Having a chat room here would just open the way for too many problems.

being banned would not be good at all... what would i do when i get off work i guess watch tv or something. As far as the chat room you could have it set up so that it would only be active when a mod enters the chat room. Maybe have a little pop-up telling (all of fishlore) that the chat has been activated and if the mod leaves or the connection is lost, the chat room is closed and everyone is booted back to the form. This would solve the issue with timing if no mods go into the chat for 2 days then the chat is closed for 2 days. Just a thought

The site gets so much traffic, it's enough for the servers to keep up without needing a chat and like Mike said, opens the door for too many problems. Most everyone has IM clients and I chat with a number of other Fishlore members that way.

This is something that I was thinking about but didn't actually write down. How many times in the past year has Mike had to upgrade the server in order to just keep the forum running? I've noticed a couple of small delays in the past week, and am getting worried that it's happening again. This would just make things worse (and thus, would be more expense for Mike.)

Over on the motorcycle board I help mod, chat is one of the more popular features. One of our members host's it through his website, the bandwidth issues would kill us on our server plan, as we're pushing so much technical data, photo's, and general, inane banter through every day. It's very good for walk-throughs of issues, and a fantastic community builder. Fun times and even with the foul-mouthed crew we can be at times, I can't recall the last time things became uncivil.

If someone does ending up sponsoring an unofficial FL chat, the big thing to bear in mind in the beginning is consistency with the forum in tone and rules. Pick a few mods out of the regular chatters, ideally mods here as well. Not so much for the potential pot-stirrers, but to lure out the lurkers who hang back here, where their words are preserved for posterity. Some of our most helpful chatters never post on the forum...

we have so many young people here..that its not worth the risk....even tho as adults, we like it...our young fishlorians are something to consider

I'm on 8 other forums and I don't have any time now so I'm totally cool with no chat. Like someone said earlier most post get responses pretty fast.
