I have been "stuck" with a cat for over a year now because I cannot find a home for her, and a shelter is not an option, neither is putting her outside. At least she is in a home where she is loved and will only go to another loving home.
If other people could have that kind of heart when it comes to their pets and be responsible.
That's how we got our third cat (okay, all of them are adoptees, but we meant to keep the first two when we took them in). She was a pregnant kitten, and the no-kill shelters were full. Our city doesn't even have a shelter contract regarding cats. By the time she gave birth, we gave up on trying to find a new home for her.

They can do so if they are capable of surviving and breeding. There's a local lake/swamp (not sure of its technical designation) that has been overrun with goldfish and apple snails. There is little vegetation left in the water, and the bottom is now coated with a layer of golfball-sized snail shells.

I am not sure about the cichlids getting released, but I have a neighbor who keeps Koi in a 55 gallon aquarium. Any time they out grow the tank he releases them into a local drainage ditch and buys smaller ones.

Now I'm pretty sure that's illegal. The thing about species like koi and goldfish, and a smaller extent convicts. Is that they're incrediablly hardy. While most natural predators will make a quick meal out of them goldfish and koi can survive in colder climates over winter provided that the water's deep enough. Cons while tropical seem to live in pretty much anything. My university was over-run with cons at one point and finally resorted to placing them in an indoor pond, un-heated, and they're doing well. I think that there's a carnivorous fish in there since the fry seem to be more under control.
