Fluval 304 Bio-Max

For all you canister filter users out there (and specifically Fluval filters) has anyone found a less expensive alternative to using the biomax as the biological holder in the units? Our LFS sells a box for almost $20.00 which indicates they should be replaced on a regular interval. How long do they last? There just has to be some kind of "DIY" media that can be used as an alternative?

They definitely don't need to be replaced unless they are falling apart. The company just says that to get you to spend more money. I've never replaced Biomax and some of it is close to 5 years old. Just rinse it off in tank water when you're doing filter maintenance.

Really! That $20 isn't sounding so expensive anymore! Thanks harpua!
