i'd definitely go with a canister filter, i don't have any myself so i can't give you any specific recommendations, but the canister filters will last a lot longer and provide much better filtration than a HOB filter can

Good morning. Above is link to the "reviews" section of the forum that you may find helpful.
I have to respectfully disagree with Agabr concerning how long HOB filters last. I have an old Whisper 5 that has been running not stop for 10 years. Personally I like the Aqua Clear (AC) HOB and think they do a tremendous job. The AC 110 has a 500gph and has soooo much room for bio media. Very quiet filter.

Extra filtration is always good as long as your fish aren't being blown around by the current. You want filtration to be 8 to 10 x the volume of your tank. 55g tank should have 440gph to 550 GPH or more.

I run 2 HOB AquaClear (70/50) on my tank. Never hear them running, only the water returning to the tank which is very quiet unless the water level is low. They're like HOB canister filters too, since the only limit on media is what will fit in them.

I've also run a Fluval 305 with a Penguin 200 Bio-Wheel and it kept the tank clear and clean. Wasn't impressed with the Fluval though, mainly because of the priming system. Next canister will definately be Eheim. They have low GPH but massive amounts of media and less demanding maintenance that other canisters from what I've seen/read.
