| Mourning Catman I was just directed to this site from the cory one and so glad i found the way. Yesterday we lost our 10 yr old Black Cory, "Catman". I have been so sad and quite emotional. I thought i was being irrational but feel releived to be in the company of others now. We lost a cat after 14 yrs to cancer this time last year which was devastating. Our pets are our children and the timing of this death brings many memories, creates new emotions, and stirs anxiety for the future. I have had fish die in the past, and even been a bit down over it. Catman lived for over 10 yrs though and this is just much harder than I thought. I have not been able to even disperse with his remains (though we have removed from tank, he is in a special handpainted jar in water now). He is certainly not a flusher, perhaps a burial with the other special fishies of yesteryear....I just don't know. He just seems to deserve more somehow. Cremation seems ghastly, like we would be cooking him. Help! |

| Re: Mourning Catman Why don't you have a little memorial ceremony in the garden? If you were really attached to him, you could always say a few words, and put him in the earth in the garden in his little box. You've seen from this section that many are really devastated by the death of their favorite fish. It shows how much you cared for him. I definitely can't bring myself to flush any of my deceased fish, nevermind my favorite. You're not alone to feel this way about a recently passed fish, don't worry. Many of us will speak kind words to you, am sure. |

| Re: Mourning Catman we like to bury our special fish under a little tree in the backyard and say goodbye to them with a little ceremony. When we lost our dear little Super Mario, that tradition started. Daisy the gold twinbar Platy and Jericho (who we only had 2 days before seizures of some kind took him) are beside him. Maybe buying a little young tree to plant and bury him by would be a fitting send-off to Catman? And the tree would always be known as his tree.
It is really tough to lose a special fish, especially after so long. But take comfort in the great life that you gave him, the funny things he did and that he gave & received the love you had for him in his own Cory Cat way. He was happy and well cared for and loved, and lived a very long life. |

| Re: Mourning Catman Mourningmom, I am glad you found fishlore also. I haven't had a fish for 10 years yet, but did have a cat for 24 years, and believe it or not a cow for 22 years, both of which were extremely hard to lose. I agree a small ceremony in a garden is the way to say good by. For me it is special to plant a perennial plant in memory, that way for years to come you can see a bit of him.
When you get to feeling better, join in with posts, maybe you will feel like sharing pictures of your tank with us.

| Re: Mourning Catman Poor Catman. I'm sorry about your loss. I bury my fish in a little patch of land off to the side of our backyard. I'd be all for a little fish cemetery, but my boyfriend thinks that flushing them is fine, so I figure it's a compromise. |
