This morning I adopted a little gold and black oranda
goldfish who I named Baby because she was so small. She got along with my two other goldies Sumo and Munchkin right away. She adapted to her new home very quickly and had a fun day playing with the other fishies and exploring her new home.
Tonight I decided to do a
water change on the tank. Even though I don't like to do water changes the same day I add fish, I thought it was best to go ahead and do one since it has been over a week since the last one.
For some reason, my python wasn't sucking the water, so I burried the end under the gravel so that nobody could swim inside of it, and walked over to the sink to fix it. I was away from the tank for less than 30 secconds and to my dismay, when I got back over to the tank, the end of the hose had popped out the gravel and Baby was sitting inside of the wide opening. I got her out immediately and she didn't even get sucked up into the narrow rubber tubing. I thought all was well but when I looked at her, I knew something was wrong. Her side was ripped open and her some of her organs were sticking out.
I was so shocked I just started crying because I didn't know what to do for her. After I calmed myself down, I looked at her wound closely and decided that no amount of medicine would heal her. This was no small wound, it literally consumed her whole side. I decided it was best to put her out of her missery. I had a bottle of euthanese on hand, so I put her to sleep to ease her suffering.
Even though, her time with me was short, she was a great little fish, and she will be missed. I hate seeing animals suffer, and I know that I did the right thing by ending her pain. Sorry for the long post everyone. It has just been a sad night, so I needed to get this out.
