Mass Death

Three weeks ago I lost my cory cat: Herbert
Two weeks ago I lost a second cory cat: Whitey
Yesterday a brand new Turquoise Male Guppy, I hadn't had a chance to name yet died.

Today: I lost my baby Precious and her 3 sons. Precious was one of my first fish and I rescued each of her children from the jaws of their parents and an uncle. Also today my other new guppy, a Tequila Sunrise died.

All of these fish are survived by Precious' only daughter 'Lil Bit, The last of my original cory cats Tiny, and by the two cory cats I got to keep Tiny company after his brothers died.

your tank looks overstocked. You should have no more than 10" worth of adult fish in your ten gallon. That goes for all fish. An example of a good stock (not to say yours has to be like this) is the following:

5 neon tetras >> 5"
2 pygmy cories >> 4"

This way only nine inches is used up and one inch of "mistake space" is in place. This is only an example.

gee, that makes me feel so much better. It was perhaps overstocked this morning it is no longer overstocked. This ten gallon now only contains 3 cory cats = 6" and 1 guppy = 1" for a grand total of 7" and she looks like she is fading fast. lectures as this time are not helpful, however, sympathy/empathy for the pain i am dealing with right now, would be helpful.

Hi Muffymouse...
so very sorry to hear you lost your babies. Its so hard loosing fish an then to lose a bunch in a very short time is not only sad but very frustrating Im sure.
Do you have any idea what happened to them and why you lost them in such a short time?

Hmm... this sounds a little fishy (sorry about the pun)! What is your ammonia/nitrites?
Had they been acting weird/something look wrong?

I have no idea what caused it. My ammonia and nitrites tested at a perfect 0, my nitrates tested at 7 my temp has been a beautiful 80. Perhaps it was the two new guppys I had added on Saturday (non qt'd ) maybe one of them had something wrong with it that i couldn't see. but they both acted very happy and healthy until i came home and found them dead. The others started looking a bit depressed on Sunday night and really bad on Monday morning, by Monday night all were gone but 'Lil Bit, who was made it until 3:00am Tuesday morning. My cory cats are all 3 very happy and healthy looking fish. So I am at a loss as to the exact nature of their deaths.

I am sorry for your loss... that is very disheartening. I dont know if you are trying to get to the bottom of why they died or just wanted to post them a memorial. If you are trying to figure it out I would say that over such short amount of time, with no negative readings, and no visible signs of infection, it likely could have been some toxin (air freshener, windex for example). Some crazy disease is always a possiblity too. Again Im sorry for your loss.

And I emphathize today. My last Cory died this morning... no idea why.
