Lost my GBR over the weekend.. :-(

My lil guy the German Blue Ram was living in the 55g tank since july. He was the lone species of his kind since I had not been able to find any tankmates for him around here.
For a few days he had been hiding out under the bubble wand and only coming out to eat. He also was acting shy which is not like him. When I would observe him for any physical ailments I found none. His gills looked good.. nice shine and color to his body, breathing normally and eating normally. Then on saturday I found him on his side, breathing heavy. I took him right out and put him in the QT tank, thinking a change of water may help and I didnt want the other fish picking on him when he was down.
I didnt use any meds, as I had no idea what was wrong. I did a water test, the ammonia was 0, nitrIte 0 and nitrAte around 10. So I knew the water quality was good. He never improved and I lost him sunday afternoon.
He was truly one of our favorite fish and I always expected to find a roomie for him, only once did I find a female and he was so happy for four days til I lost her. Im so saddened by his sudden death.

Sorry about your gbr...I heard they were hard to keep. I dunno if this is true or not.

thanks Allie

They can be hard to keep, but had him in with my Discus and Angels and cardinal tetras which are all equally sensitive fish and doing fine. I had him for almost 8 months so thought I was doing ok by him.

Maybe he was just tired of being lonely,I'll be sure to note the need for tankmates as I want to get a ram soon.

Hi Kate, I was saddened to hear you lost your ram. He was so beautiful. He died kind of like Poppet....just so quick. Perhaps they are up there together goofing off...........makes me feel better to think so anyway!!

g'morning Val... Thank you... Its always a shock to loose a fish that seemed fine one minute.. and not the next.

Last nite I lost one of the new red rainbow fish. He was a good size too, around 2.24 inches in length. Now I have to worry and watch the others. I know that they had an almost three hour drive to get here on friday nite, but my daughter did a good job. Even stopping once along the half way mark to change the bags of water and by doing that adding some more oxygen to the bag. The LFS store gave her extra bags and suggested it. So I guess I always assumed Id loose at least one out of the 7 new fish. Now I have to watch them carefully for any more losses.
