Heartstrings...

I recently replied to a thread in which someone had lost a beloved fish... which got me thinking about the differences in which each fish affects us.

For instance, we have 11 tanks. Each tank different, with different types of fish in each. Some fish are favorites, some are cool, some are neither liked or disliked, just kinda there...

I have lost some fish since starting this endevor, and find that certain fish when passing... well, just pass. Others pull at the heartstrings when they go. Like my betta and my Angelfish, when we lost them I was sad that they passed, and yet there have been fish that have passed that I just felt indifferent about.

Wierd. Some of the fish we own have names, while most do not. It just seems like the ones we felt we had to name, are more special somehow...

I have one fish, right now, George... who I just love. He is "My Fish" and hes special to me... not for any other reason than... well, he just is...

?? who knows ??

But for those of us who have lost that special little one...

RIP

True, I have an upside down catfish named Gabby, who I couldn't bear to lose, I know how it feels...

Well spoken....and I agree with what you say. I am relatively new to fishkeeping, and started with bettas. I could not believe a fish could engage me the way they do. Although I also have a 55 and a 10 -( community and guppy grow out) it is the bettas that have stolen my heart. My krib is a close second, and the sailfins, who all have names. Seems with me once I name them, I am a goner.

Today I bought 3 more red eye tetras for my 55, to build the shoal to 7...no names, but they are a really beautiful fish. The ones I got today are tiny little mites, and it amazes me how they all come togther, let the little ones know they are at the bottom of the pecking order, and then carry on.

I just lost my bad boy Wink, and today was tearing down his tank, and can't believe how emotional it was for me. Even my husband is saddened by his passing and we have been talking of all the funny and naughty things he did, day after day.

This is the thing I like best about this forum, I can express being gutted at the loss of a fish, and no one thinks I'm nuts - well..maybe.

Thanks for your heartfelt post - I can truly relate - even if my heart isn't crushed by all of them, I can and do wonder at the beauty of each and every fish.

RIP little Wink Jack Sparrow!

back at you!

Too true. I lost a CAE a few days ago and, though a little sad, it really didn't phase me. If I were to lose Bill or Oscar I'd be crushed. (yes Oscar is an Oscar). I have 3 named fish. Bill, Oscar and Donatello. Out of 20 fish I named 3. They aren't even my oldest fish (actually Bill is the oldest lol). I've only had the Oscar for 6-9 months but she's (I know Oscar is a boys name) got a special place in my heart. My new Betta is quickly working on aquiring rights to a name. lol Cute little guy. There's something to be said for fish that come to the front to see you and get happy about it. Like the excited puppy who's been home alone all day.

I know what you are saying.
We have had 100s of fish here, only a few have been named b/c something about their personalities stood out. You get a bond with certain fish, as you do with cats or dogs. My angels are very special to me...I had them since 2 of them were quarter sized. My betta always get named...all betta are characters. On the other hand we have all kinds of Malawi african cichlids with no names except 2, my blue hap pair. Spike(male) & Blu(female)...they were the first cichlids I ever had back in 2006.
It seems as tho the special ones I name usually die on me. Weird!
