I bought two oto's yesterday.

I was so excited about them!! I woke up this morning and one of them was sucking away and one was dead inside my colluseum. :-( I knew this might happen but it stinks! My tank was all set!

I'm testing the water as we speak. I heard they don't tolerate any ammonia, but I just did a wc.....

It does stink. Sorry to hear it....Unfortunately they are very delicate to water conditions, especially when first introduced. Many are wild caught and rarely make the journey to the LFS....Then, by the time they acclimate to the LFS tanks, someone whisks in and buys them up. They just can't handle all of the transportation and changing conditions....Even the ones that make it through the intial journey are often in rough shape.....Take your dead guy back and get another one....Make sure he has a round little belly which could indicate a good sign that he's been eating....Don't be a afraid to give him a good visual inspection before settling on him...Take him home, acclimate him and just keep a good eye on them...As mentioned before the first several weeks are critical for their survival. I've had good luck and I'm sure you will too...

they are cute little fish but so delicate it seems -- many people take them home to have the same thing happen. you'll want to get at least 1 more for the little guy that's left and use both prime and novaqua+ on their water.

Sorry to hear that. The exact same thing happened with my 2 otos I got a long time ago.

When I woke up, I didn't want to leave him in the tank but I had to go to work... so I flushed him.

I doubt Petco will give me another one even though I have the receipt.

if yours is like ours, i'd count on a hard time getting a replacement. ours will laugh in your face if you try that.

Well, I was worried about him/her. I bought 2 more today. So wish me luck with them!!

I'm just going to keep doing tests and wc's until they're all set.

And oh yeah, I was picky. I made them get me the ones with the biggest bellies!

lol.. it wasn't hard, considering our deathco only had 5 total.. they rarely had any so we were happy getting 5.
