crayfish identification

hey folks how is everyone my g/f was given a crawfish by a customer and i would like to know more about it. is there any chance whatsoever that i would be able to specifically identify this critter? there seems to be about a hundred makes and models of crayfish resident to this area. this one came from a farm and was bound for the cookpot. i asked the farmer and he was astounded that they werent all called crawdads. so is there any website that has some sort of sensible identification system? thanks for your help Lee

you see, when a lobster reaches a certain age, he leaves home and travels the oceans looking for love in all the wrong places.. after a long journey, he comes to a magical body shop where he gets a paint job, new innards and leaves a crayfish.

actually:
Crayfish, also called crawfish or crawdad, are closely related to the lobster. More than half of the more than 500 species occur in North America, particularly Kentucky (Mammoth Cave) and Louisiana in the Mississippi basin. Crayfish also live in Europe, New Zealand, East Asia and throughout the world, including the Tristan da Cunha Islands. Nearly all live in freshwater, although a few survive in salt water. Crayfish are characterised by a joined head and thorax, or midsection, and a segmented body, which is sandy yellow, green, or dark brown in colour. The head has a sharp snout, and the eyes are on movable stalks. Crayfish are usually about 7.5 cm (3 inches) long

Re: crayfish identification

yeah crayfish are just part of the scenery around here many memories playing with them in creeks when i was a kid many pinches..... anyway as i got older i picked up on hunting them as they make a really good live bait i have never gotten into eating them just don't care for the traditional spice they are cooked in but i had one before for about two years in a tank and now we have this adult he seems quite happy but was an adult when we got him err... her? whichever it is.... anyway dont really have much time left with it since they have relatively short lives and it is full grown now about 4 inches from nose to tail and with claws extended probably closer to seven im scared to put another fish in with it since i had the bad situation with the pleco maybe just more rosy red's but i like watching him/her since it looks prehistoric and quite dangerous with the right tank mates they make great additions and if you could luck up and get a breeding pair that would be simply fabulous thumbs up to the crayfish Lee
