| Help Identifying a Cichlid A friend of mine is tying to find a home for 2 of her cichlids and I offered to take them in, unfortunately she lives out of town and has yet to email a picture. She bought them cuz she liked them but doesnt know what kind they are. They are 2 years old, 3 inches long, vertical stripes, and the tips of the back fins are bright green. I know thats not as good as a pic but does anyone know what kind that COULD be Any help would be great. When Im sent the pic I'll post it. Thanks. | I think it is either a Copadichromis or Aulonocara. I can't be specific aobut the species though as they are so interbred that it is very difficult to tell which variant yours may be. I'm fairly sure it is some sort of Copadichromis though.
Sorry I can't be more helpful. Nice looking fish though!! |

| Copadichromis sp. "Flavimanus Lundu" is what it looks like to me. Or maybe Aulonocara guentheri?
The nose is making me think Aulonocara, but the rest of the body seems to be copadichromis. |

| Are the goldfish still in the 25gal? Any rift lake cichlid will make pretty short work out of belting a goldfish. 25gal isn't big enough for even one of the cichlids in question. Even not knowing the specific species I can tell you that a minimum tank size for 99.9% of rift lake cichlids is 55gal. There are a couple that can go in smaller tanks than that but these guys definitley need a large tank. 25gal is barely large enough to house the goldfish. I wouldn't consider adding anything else to the tank at all. |

| They won't necessarily be giants but rift lake cichlids generally require much more living space than the typical tropical fish. Seeing as they are relatively small for thier age I would suggest that they are likely to only get to about 6" but 25gal will still not provide the living space they require. Perhaps if you intend to get a larger tank in the next couple of months you could house them very temporarily in 25gal. I wouldn't want them in there for more than 2months though. They would also require extensive rockwork to provide caves & hidey holes as all rift lake cichlids do. |

| I have female red peacocks and i don't believe that is one... she looks very similar but the shape of the body is much different. It is either something else or if it is a red peacock i would imagine she already has suffered a growth stunt its hard to tell though... Most female peacock varieties look VERY similar. I honestly think you may never find out... |

| Well if I never find out thats fine. I'm continuing to care for her the same way the previous owners did, and I am enjoying this little oddball more everyday. After reading about other Malawi cichlids I cannot wait to get the bigger tank and get a couple more. Thanks for all the help everybody. |
