I thought common too to begin with but the head and upper body is awfully wide to be a common. Thats one of the reasons I asked for a lighter pic

Looks like my common, he gets light patches when he's stressed out.

Thanks! I will try to get a lighter pic...he just stays under that filter box all the time.

I ordered him off my list as a "false zebra" pleco (no L number) and was disappointed that he wasn't...as nice as his price tag . Googling, there really isn't such a thing as a "false zebra"..so I was curious.

Its a common plec. There are different variations and certainly not a clown plec. Chaeck out plantcatfish and they will give you an id but to me it looks like my common bristlenose plec.

This is a true royal plec that is not stressed and as you can see that this doesn't look like the plec in question.

Common pleco can get over 13 inches
http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog...?species_id=88

Common Btistlenose gets to almost 5 inches
http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog...?species_id=49

After looking at the shape again he could be a bristlenose.

Looks female to me. The male has the big bristles on the nose area.

Could be depending on the size. They don't get bristles until their about 2 inches or so. Even then some females get a few around the lip.

That's funny you say at 2 inches, my golden one has bristles already and is about an inch in size but none going up the middle yet.

I did say big bristles, yes females have very small bristles but they don't go up the middle of the head. Only round the lip.

The first thing I thought was a female bristle. The discoloration patches look exactly like one of mine. The colours change of course though.

Still not sure what he is, but I let a friend have him...meh, kind of a moot point now. I don't think he was a common though.
