Help IDing my new Gourami

Here are the family's newest members, colorful (male dwarf gourami) Melvin, and light colored (? gourami) Fran.

At the store we thought they were male and female of the same type but after the 'female' has been swimming in the tank I'm thinking she's a he, and possibly a different type but I'm not sure.

Does anyone else have a suggestion?

Oh, yeah, and they have been eating my plants roots! Are they going to kill my plants and is this normal or should I give them something food-wise so they stop?

So you really think Fran is a female, then? I thought the fishes shapes were identical, but from what I had read about dwarf gouramis is that the female is grey-silver, but Fran is yellowy with almost orange tips on her bottom fins. That's kinda what made me think she was something else. Also her top fins come to a point like the males are supposed to. However, I'm not exactly a fish expert so I'm probably wrong and have no idea what I'm talking about!

For sure a pair as far as I can tell, what does the dorsal fin look like, pointed or round

Oh well, just make sure they are being nice to each other, don't want anyone getting beat up. What type of plants do you have and have they been eating one type of plant or multiple types?

After watching them for a bit, the female is definitely a girl! She has a rounded dorsal fin. She also likes to keep her fins prominantly displayed. Not sure why...

I thought you were supposed to get a male/female combo so that there wouldn't be fighting between the males. So far they've been cordial. The male was 'feeling' the female a bit earlier with his feelers. One is shorter than the other...will it grow back?

I have an amazon sword that has a couple roots that aren't submerged and they have been tearing at those. To be honest, I'm not sure if they're just picking or eating. They spit out a lot. I also have wendtii, java fern, banana plants and one I don't remember the name. It's got pointy leaves and it's reddy/brown colored.

My DG's often pick at the substrate/gravel, all fish are opportunistic feeders, so if they find something they can eat, they probably will.

Don't be too disconcerted if they're not eating, they may be 'embarassed' to eat in front of you, and you might catch them scavenging later.
