What is this!??

I was given this fish when I bought my last tank as the previous owner was going to flush him/her. He/she had been in a white bucket for a week then when the owner went to move it to an icecream container for me he dropped it on the floor!!! Anyway it survived that and has been in my new uncycled 90 Gallon for 4 days now. I know it's not good but I don't want to risk it in my 20G with my other fish.

The previous owner had it given to him so he has no idea what it is either. It's almost 4 inches long, silver in colour with a reddish tail and reddish tinge on top/bottom dorsal fin.

I've taken pics but am having issues cropping them. If they're not clear enough I'll add more.

I think that is a rainbow fish, but I don't know what particular species.

Awesome! Two people say rainbow so problem solved. I plan on eventually adding Angels to that tank so will they get along?

Edit: Make that 3 people

I had a look at that pic and it says size of about 2 inches. Mine is already 4 so can't be a dwarf. Cheers for the link though

Oh, sorry Lol I know NOTHING about them, but earlier today there was a thread about someone who wanted dwarf neon rainbow fish, so I looked them up. Thats what yours looks like! Haha

EDIT: Missed the 4 inches part in the op post too.... had a sleepover with 5 other girls last night... got very little sleep... lol

Definitely not. The fish is 4 inches. It might be an Irian rainbow.

Fit the bill? I think your guy is stressed, so his color is faded. I can see a faint line on him that looks like this guy.

Yes that's the closest so far. He was definitely stressed as he had no colour when I got him but colour slowly returning. He's got a while to got though Thanks heaps for your help.

I'm going to venture a guess that it is/or closely related to Melanotaenia Splendida..hard to tell from the photos as he seems stressed but should turn out quite pretty once settled. Nice save!

I think we've got a winner! Looking at various photos of these I'd say this is what I have.

Cheers everyone

Bugger. I only just looked at this thread & I picked what it was straight away as I have these guys already but crazedACD beat me to it. They should be okay with Angels so long as you have 6 or more of them. They can be a bit of a nipper but so long as there are a few of thier own kind they will concentrate on each other rather than thier tankmates.
