IDing my pleco

I was sold this bushy-nose pleco as just "bushy-nose pleco". I asked if the fish store had any specifics on what type, like the catalog number, and the guy just stared at me and said he'd never heard of that. Thanks in advance for any help

Yep. Common Bristlenose. I'd be concerned about buying Plecos from an LFS that doesn't know about the L system of cataloging them. You could end up with almost anything. There are lots of plecs that look similar but reach very different sizes.

So we are going to stop buying from 83.7% of LFS

Maybe it's different over there but all plecos are sold by the catalogue number where I am rather than by name. I guess I'm spoilt that way.

Most LFSpeople are at least familiar with the L numbers.

Until aug 2008 this was known as sp (3) now it has a L #
If that's not it check the likn below and start at ancistrus(bristlenose family) roll your cursor over the names and a few pics will show up. Maybe you can find yours

In fairness to the LFS I will agree they are familiar with L #'s.

But I don't think the average LFS will use them as most of the public will just stare at the name and have no idea......

It is for sure a bushynose or also called a bristlenose. The two white tips on the tail are a dead give away. Keep in mind that just because it doesn't have bristles on it's face doesn't mean that it's not a bushynose. Females do not get bristles (or bristles big enough to be worth anything lol). So if it's about 1.5 inches or 2 and there are no signs of bristles (look really close)... it's a girl. Get a boy and make babies! One of the easiest breeding plecos.
