firemouth??

My neighbor bought this at Petsmart yesterday and he thinks it is either a convict or firemouth.

Sorry to disagree on this one. This looks like a stresseed Firmouth cichlid sub-adult, likely a female.

Notice the shape of the head and the dark blotched spots. The red coloration is visible in the body and fins.

I would suggest to your neighbor to feed with spirulina and Cichlid food, to take good care of the tank. Firemouth are quite peaceful Cichlids.

Looks to me like the shape of the head is off because the fish is thin. I still think convict, but regardless of what it is, it's stressed and needs a quality diet to fatten it up a little.

I have to disagree too... He has a convict-like body... but like amanda his head is throwing me off...

He kinda reminds me of BB's karma when she was little... with the head shape and everything...

Honduran Red Point?

I'm going to respectfully disagree with both Firemouth and Convict. I think it's a young Flowerhorn. But the second fish is definatly a Con.

do you think the second one is a male? and if so will the two fish be ok together in a 75 gallon?

I keep Convicts and Firemouth, and then some (Tiger Oscar, Silver Dollars, Angelfish, Kenyi) in a six footer, 145gal tank.

A 4 footer, 75gal should be OK for both, even paired-off as long as you provide at least two caves/shelters at opposite ends of the tank.

Actually it's easy, just takes a bit more time than smaller tanks.

I use one AquaClear 110 powerhead with a prefilter case without the media inside and a 25' garden hose to remove water from the tank (dumped in the bath tub).

I use one 100' garden hose for tap water in. Add the water conditioner (e.g. Prime or Tetra AquaSafe) just before letting water in.

Since I live in the Caribbean, the difference in temperature of the water in the tank and the tap water is negligible.

During the first four to six months I performed weekly water changes of up to 50%. Since then, as the tank matured (and I upgraded substrate, plants, driftwood, stones and claypots and also I let the rear wall of the tank alone so a slime of beneficial bacteria lives there) I moved to every other week or every three weeks.

I began with three AquaClear 110 as main filters. Today I use only two of those plus a Resun BF-200 Internal Wet/Dry Filter and a Resun submersible pump (with prefilter) feeding a 9W ViaAqua Terminator UV-C Sterilizer running at 220-250GPH.

Nitrates can go up to 25ppm (40ppm is the highest I've had). At one time I had Water Hyacinths and Water Lettuce and got consistent readings of Nitrates at zero (they needed way too much lighting and fertilization to keep up with their demands!).

I enjoy doing maintenance. I take my time. I have a more powerful pump if I am running short on time but I'm done in 40 minutes if aiming at 50% but I usually do a 25%WC every two or three weeks within 25 minutes.
