Sand or gravel will work. However if you use HOB filters I would use gravel. As the fish grows a bit it will move around the sand lots and it will get in the impellor of your HOB and you will be replacing it constantly. If you have sponge filters then sand will be fine.

The pics are very dark but I will look at them more.

Brian

I looked at the pics more. A young fish will have the spots , but the spots on this fish look pretty big. How big is it? 3" or so?

But the stripped fish in the video isn't a red devil, am I missing something here

It looks like a barred midas to me, which people commonly mix with red devils.

It doesn't matter if you get a fish in the U.S. or in Australia...an A. Labiatus (red devil) is a A. Labiatus. Your fish first is not for sure. I also doubt the first one you got is a barred midas either, those fish grow in a short and tall kinda way, where as your is long and slender if you know what I mean. What happened to the first one anyway, do you still have it?

Now I am confused about the video....not a word anyone.....
Did you show that video to show us the stripped fish? If you think your fish is similiar to the stripped one in the video then sorry dude you didn't get a red devil again. Like I said these two fish, the red devil and the barred midas, are two fish in the hobby where 99% of the time they will be hybrids. These two fish have been screwed by hobbiest for far too long, meaning breeding the two together, and geting a pure one is difficult. I know the shop promised you it is a red devil, and it may very well be. But if you think yours looks very much like the stripped fish in the video well you may have been lied to again.

I say give it some time and see if it goes through a color change before you run out and buy another one. You said it is just under 3" right? Although it should have begun a color change by now, who knows maybe it is a late bloomer

Brian

Here is an article I had saved, it is from the 80's and a lot has changed but still some good info if you are interested.

That could be it too. Ive seen parrots have their color change when theyre a bit bigger too... maybe since he/she is a hybrid it is taking a while...

Hey Matt

I looked at your gallery are the new pics there yet?

The last 4 pics still look like 'Cichlasoma' Uropthalmus.

The first 4 I am not sure, but would say probably not a RD. At that size they shouldn't be that color......
I think I am missing the new pics.

By the way I did happen to pick up some red devils, I posted them in the freshwater fish and tank photos section if you are interested.
